Noir

Head On A Stem, 'noir' by Odilon Redon

Under the Milkweed Moon
frost bites at empty husks,
strewn like runes
in a circle
under cold, beautiful  stars.

I turn from the window
and pull the blanket
up, around my shoulders
as I nestle into you.
And then we send our spooning dreams
out to the Milkweed Moon.

This is for all the toads in the IGRT.  Joy has asked us to write something in resonse to one of the beautiful images by Odilon Redon.  Click on the link to read more about this artist and more responses to his work.

  1. Lovely, Mary. The imagery created with your words surpasses the artwork itself! You had me with "runes!"

  6. Mary, you find the soft, sensual quality in this image and give it voice. It's one of my favorite images by Redon, and I have never been able to hit on something just right for it(though I did stick it at the end of my poem, it was more just because I like it--don't tell, ok?) Here, you reach into the image and give substance to the dreamlike feel he imposes, mysterious, but warm and inviting like love itself. Thanks so much for participating--I wouldn't have wanted to miss this one.

  8. Love the parallel of runes and spooning, both sent from under the moon and to it.

  11. This is so charming-- I can't help thinking of the dish that ran away with the spoon when the cow jumped over it! It is lovely. Thanks ! K

  12. This is a gem. Milkweed always enchanted me as a child - the little slips of white puffing out of the pods and then the next day or so floating off with the wind leaving just a shell and dry stem… I love everything about this, the pondering at the window, slipping back into bed, a warm lover next to her. This is the type of "moment" poem I adore!
