Abracadabra

I create what I speak.
The word made
flesh
and stone,
water and bone,
hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium
and so on…
the most elemental magic.

Before time began
it issued forth from the source
sent out over the abyss,
into the darkness
before there was darkness.
Then into the dark
a spark was spoke:

Abracadabra!

This week I learned Abracadabra, translated literally means, "I create what I speak."  I had a little fun playing around with this for G-man's FF55.  Click on the link and check it out.

  1. Mary! I have a poem using that quote in the hopper, too(of course, a dark, depressing one ;_) ) --but yours is just perfect. I love the incantation of the elements cascading right off their their verbal table, and the sparkle of magic throughout.

  3. I like your elemental poem, "sent into the darkness before there was darkness". Beautiful, indeed! Nor did I know it meant that.

  6. This gave me a lot to think about, Mary. I like the idea of creating what one speaks. There is a lot of magic from the time before time began that is worth paying attention to!

  14. This is a fine kind of magic you have woven with your words.

I read once that Abracadabra was a charm for fever - the patient writes one letter a day, and by the end the fever is gone. Of course, most viruses run a 10 day course - if they don't kill you in the process. I am thrilled to know what the word really means.
