In my dreams
you wait for me
in dark, secret places,
welcoming me
to the midnight circus.
The Ring Master bows;
the show begins.
“In the center ring we have…”
I smell
sawdust and dung and cotton candy.
Then the Ring Master asks
for a volunteer,
and I realize
I’m being shot from the cannon.

Very nicely done.

Love it...although I would hate to be shot from a cannon. :)
ReplyDeletea dramatic twist in the dream
ReplyDeleteWhat a twist in the ending ~ Enjoyed the 55 shot from the canon ~ Happy weekend ~
ReplyDeleteThe photo adds a surreal element. Something about a circus (like clowns) always strikes me as slightly spooky. I like the third stanza. Perfectly captured my emotion. And a good use of lines breaks.
ReplyDeletethe shooting is fun...its the landing that scares me...ha....the dark circus is a rich place...could def find a few things to write about that...
ReplyDeleteOh no.....love the ending! Truly would be scary to have gotten oneself into that!!! Yikes. Hope the dream ended before the landing.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I hate surprises. And clowns, and circuses, for that matter. Great atmosphere to this one, Mary. Dreams are a constantly shifting world of their own, full of all kinds of circus acts.
ReplyDeleteMan, you really gotta watch what you volunteer for.
ReplyDelete..shot from a canon and ending up in a poem about it.
ReplyDeleteLovely.
Shot from a canon... :) love it! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, has a "Moulin Rouge" feel to it! Thanks for the laugh at the end.
