I write to order the storm
I write to save myself
I write to know
what I think
and what I feel
I write the way NASA sends signals into space
offered up
without expectation
This is for dVerse, where Gay asked us to come up with a writing Manifesto. I don't know if this is quite a manifesto, but it's why I write, mostly.
searching for intelligent life ? :)
ReplyDeleteyou're worth the reply !
I like this.. write to save yourself.. but fortunately we are here to listen... I like this a lot..
ReplyDeleteIndeed - I like it - I think of poetry as shamanic (if there is such a word) from time to time - it gets to deep and magical places within us that we never even knew were there. In a world of multimedia, who has expectations, but it's always a joy when someone finds that thing you wrote, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteOoh, lovely! And to write without expectation of a return - how amazing.
ReplyDeletesmiles...love the line on sending signals up into space...not expecting anything back...but when we do get something back, how exciting is that....smiles...
ReplyDeletethe first line is killer /I write to order up the storm/ which somehow cues in my head Jim Morrison's poetry, and the late 60's; like your style, and applaud your declarations, but remember vibes are reciprocated; expect responses, & they will come; don't be the custodian of 100's of poems nobody read, words of wisdom nobody took to heart.
ReplyDeleteI don’t know if it’s a manifesto either (what IS a manifesto other than in politics?) but it’s good.
ReplyDeleteWriting to know oneself, that comes nearest to my ideas too.
Writing without expectation -- ah what a beautifully freeing thought!
ReplyDeleteMary, I understand that you write for yourself. It is only a small step to begin writing for a reader and your entire focus will change. Best>KB
ReplyDeleteVer' nice, Other Mary. This is the most important part of what we do.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of writing to know what you think. This is certainly something I can relate to.
ReplyDeleteNice comparison to NASA.
ReplyDeleteoffered up
ReplyDeletewithout expectation
One does it for one's own! No bother from others and no deadlines. It's a personal satisfaction. Read you Mary!

oh i like that nasa signal metaphor... it's good to send just so without too much expectation - and cool when we're surprised by what comes back
ReplyDeleteI do love when I get answers back from space! Thanks everyone!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the short answers!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more.
ReplyDeleteI like the NASA analogy - but hopefully, unlike NASA, you get more response than they do! Great manifesto!
ReplyDeletebeautiful eight line manifesto...especially to offer up without expectation - I think that is so important to remember and so easy to forget. A poet is very much like a shaman...opening unseen portals.
ReplyDeleteLove the Wittgenstein quotation.

I like the first two lines especially. Nicely done OM.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful poem and a perfect first line! K
ReplyDeletesend out the signal and see what you get in response....I like the NASA. Though I admit, I also like the idea of writing to call up the storm and definitely find myself in writing. lovely piece.
ReplyDeleteI specially like sending signals up to space without expectation ~ Just write for yourself ~
ReplyDelete"I write to know what I think and what I feel."
ReplyDeleteTrue..sometimes we don't know until we put it into words.
Awesome. :)
A very good plan! And well put. Thanks. k.
ReplyDeleteI write to save myself..I think I have felt that way before..needing to write
ReplyDeletejust to survive..
It is very important to be able to write without expectations. Nice - you put it beautifully.
ReplyDeleteAn existential vibe here. I empathize with each of your reasons for writing. Thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone. apologies for missing some of your comments before this.
