Escape Clause

When we converse
all I can think is
escape.
Does the panic show
in a white-rimmed eye,
if you bothered
 to look?

I can feel your words,
smooth, sweet, dangerous
sliding down my back.
I am wary, ungrateful,
as I silently begin
chewing off my foot.

Domestication
does not suit me.

  3. I like the heavy imagery of feeling "trapped" in this, that "chewing off" one's foot really makes you feel this. Well done, Mary.

  4. I was horrified, as a little girl, when I learned that there were traps that caught animals by their feet and that there were animals that would chew their foot off to escape. This poem reminded me of those feelings.
