Supporting Actor

“If you don't turn your life into a story, you just become a part of someone else's story.”
-Terry Pratchett

She is a minor character,
the sidekick
the wingman
her job:
to serve as contrast, support.
she will never sparkle In the spotlight
but that’s ok.
She’s grown comfortable here,
in the wings
with less pressure,
less attention.

She comes from a from a family
of safety seekers.
Her dad used to say,
“Bid ‘em high and sleep in the streets.”
So she will stand aside,
and watch the big drama
splash across the stage,
lend support when needed ,
then disappear to the wings
during the grand finale.

In the Imaginary Garden we have been asked to use a quote from either Leonard Nimoy or Sir Terry Pratchett as a jumping off point to inspire our writing.  I have used a quote from Sir Terry.  While I adore his humor and satire I didn't that direction with this.  Perhaps another time... RIP to Terry Pratchett and Leonard Nimoy.  The the world is a bit bleaker and weaker without you.

  1. I resonate with this, Mary, some of us are content to be supporters, it's more peaceful in the wings.

  2. luv your RIP, avery loving gesture; the other side of the sidekick you presented is refreshing for no one should be forced into the lime light, there purpose for everyone

thanks for dropping in to read mine

    much love...

  3. Some people do prefer the supporting role, and heaven knows such people are the backbone of many families.

  4. But in true sense they too are the main actors

  5. I really hope that she is content with her supporting role, and doesn't just dress in that costume because she's afraid of failure... This piece gripped my heart. We should each strive to be the main character in our own lives, at least!

  6. A very lovely little portrait here--well conveyed--the dialogue--(saying) you know--all the little details really build it well. Thanks. k. (Manicddaily)

  7. I love my supporting role but I have learned how to flesh her out a little and make her a stronger influence (I hope) Love this poem!

  8. Loved the choice of quote! And what an incredible poem..! :D
    Absolutely fantastic..! :D
    Lots of love,

  9. What a great sentiment.. I think at least part-time every one of us should spend a little bit of time being the supportive one.. give a little time of spotlight to someone else too.

  10. Supporters are sure needed and the backbone

  11. Ah, there a few of us taking issue with the esteemed Sir Terry, I see. (Much as we love him.) I liked your take on this.

  12. Yes, not everyone can be a star nor do they wish to be. Support is vital to success.

  13. i like your take on the quote you chose.
the supporters, or those in the background...may go un-noticed, but are the glue that that holds it all together. yes, RIP to 2 great men!

  14. Um....gosh, I think someone else probably has a better comment than I would, so....
