When the mud from the river-bottoms has settled
the hazy sky reflects on the surface
smooth and flat.
Mirrored sliver of sky and trees
so calm, no hint of stormy skies
or rough waters that came before.
No hint of what’s beneath.

ah that moment of calmness after the calamity - but still - do not overlook the undercurrent - nicely mused here -g reat response to the photo and nice to see it up at dVerse! OT
ReplyDeleteno hint of what came before or what lies beneath...rather ominous eh?
ReplyDeletenice capture mary...
ReplyDeleteSubtle and silky as a warm and calm day on that smooth river you paint--and dark as the water under the poem's hull.

ReplyDeletePerfectly painted, just like the picture itself. Amazing how the calm reflection can hide the mud and dirt underneath. I also used a double-meaning in mine. Something about the serenity of the picture seemed to invite it. Excellent, Mary! (Sorry, caught mis-spell in last comment, can't seem to type anymore!!)
ReplyDeleteNot even a tiny hint for me?

ReplyDeleteNo hint indeed. I will never look upon calm waters again after reading all the Magpies of "danger" beneath such calm. :)
ReplyDeleteI love it when it's like that, the clear fair skies after a storm and the water like a mirror reflecting the trees and sky. Lovely write.
ReplyDeleteYou captured the mysterious properties of the river beautifully .....
ReplyDeletequite the picture you have painted with these few word. beautifully penned Mary.

ReplyDeleteHow true. We must look for the pirahnas and alligators below the surface smoothness of our lives. And our rivers.
