November Thanks

Words and image by Mary Bach

There is a clear, cold light
this November morning,
and last night’s powdering of snow
transforms the ridge.

The trees weave an intricate
design of branches
studded here and there
with chickadees, jays, cardinals.

Walking through the garden
I am warmed by
your hand
in mine.

Over at dVerse Poets' Pub Brian asked us to write about something we are thankful for.

  1. gotta love those warm hands to hold us on cold nights...
we got a little snow...enough to make the mountains look really cool
    like a painted pony...

    happy day after mary....

  5. Mary,

A very fine and delicate description of November. The birdlife might be one of your photographs, as the image was easily observed. Glad I found this gem!!

    1. Thank you Eileen. I tried getting some bird pics today, but I wasn't happy with them, so I ended up using this one from my archives.

  6. Living in Western WA, near Puget Sound, the snow has not fallen here yet, but hemmed in by two mountain ranges, the snow level is 2000 feet. No snow in Sweden yet? Absurd; considering the 6-10 feet that fell on NY state; hotter, colder, crazier--the weather seems to be responding to global warming, although 50 years ago we used to blame the Russians. Your poem is lovely.

  11. Live this! Your first 2 stanzas lead the reader in one direction, but then in the 3rd, you abruptly being us "closer to home". Masterfully done!

In times of adverse conditions it is most reassuring to have a loved one by the side. Wonderful take Mary!

  15. One of the beauties of winter is the visible design of tree branches and little birds among them. And I like the warmth of hand in hand as you admire your world.

  17. What a lovely mood you set for me this morning--first thing. I saw my first chickadee this week. What a delight. Now I'm just waiting for the snow.

  18. One does have to take times to count one's blessings at this time of year. Walking hand in hand is definitely one of them! (Not to mention the beauty of the natural world!)
