Inspiration, Post Haste

Dear St. Cecilia,

I could really use some help here.
My muse took off
with a two-bit musician and a bottle of hooch,
and here I am just a week and a day
into Poem-a-Day month.
I’m desperate!
Could you sprinkle a little
magic dust from an old thesaurus,
whisper sweet nothings
(or bitter, sarcastic anythings)
in my ear?
Please, do something!

Desperately and Uninspiredly Yours,
-Other Mary

P.S. If I don’t hear back from you soon my next letter will be to Bacchus.

Abhra over at dVerse Poets Pub has asked us to write a letter.  Oh, and in case you're wondering, St. Cecilia is the patron saint of poets, writers, muscians and artists in general.  And I'll bet you know Bacchus is the Roman god of wine.

Sick Woman

When Tess Kincaid provided us with this image of 'Sick Woman' by Jan Steen at The Mag two oddly dissimilar things came to mind.  They are (and I'm not proud of this) as follows:

In the immortal words of Robert Palmer:

Doctor, Doctor gimme the news
I got a bad case of lovin’ you.
No pill is gonna cure my ill -
I got a bad case of lovin’ you.

And the other was inspired by a quote from Edna St. Vincent Millay, which seems quite fitting as it is featured on the Willow Manor blog.
“You see, I am a poet, and not quite right in the head, darling. It’s only that.”

So with that in mind I came up with this:

The voices are so loud today;
why can’t you hear them too?
They set my skull to vibrating
and pierce my temples through.

Nonplussed, my pulse can scarce push past
the throng that crowds my heart.
The pills you push will not convince
these voices to depart.

Churning, yearning they all want
for me to give them voice,
Bring me my pen and paper, don’t
you see I have no choice?

And there you have it.
This is also at the open link night at dVerse.  Check out the others there.

Empty

Here is a little offering. The lines, "Inspiration stalks us/ through gloom" are from HD's Trilogy. It's an amazing piece. I just went back and read it again, and it leaves me awed. HD you rock!

Empty

Some days
The words don't come
And the rain does
As HD said
Inspiration stalks us
Through gloom
But she is not always a good tracker
And the page remains
As empty as
My heart
